An eisteddfod (eye-steth'-vod)
is a traditional Welsh competition of poetic, literary, musical
and other artistic endeavors. It
dates back to the Middle Ages, when Welsh bards would gather to perform,
compete and publicly establish their skills in poetry and music. Such was
the respect accorded to their arts in Welsh society that they were often
thought to possess almost supernatural power.
The North American Festival of Wales
is proud to offer our eisteddfod for performers, writers and artists
who wish to follow in the footsteps of those ancient bards. We encourage
all amateur and semi-professionalsingers,
musicians, orators, story tellers, and writers of all skill levels to participate
in this year’s eisteddfod.
Contests are scheduled for prizes
in solo voice, vocal ensemble, choir, instrumental (solo and ensemble),
story telling and recitation. A literary contest will feature competitions
in poetry and prose. The highlight of the eisteddfod is the competition
for the coveted David G. Morris Prize for semi-professional singers.
Provided each year through the generosity of Mr. Morris, the winner of
this competition receives a funded trip to compete in the National Eisteddfod
of Wales.
Full details on entering the Eisteddfod
are provided in the entry form.
